When the landscape serves as a model.
AWARD-WINNING DESIGN HOTEL NEAR BOLZANO, ITALY.
Our design hotel above Bolzano in Italy demonstrates how a building can recede into the landscape. A construction that demanded much from the architects and structural engineers and was awarded renowned prizes.
A BOLD ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
As hosts, we desired a sustainable concept that would last for many years and an extension that would bring the existing building into contemporary architecture. In collaboration with the Atelier Bergmeisterwolf, a round suite building in a hillside location was created, becoming one with the movement of the landscape. Architects Prof. Dr. Michaela Wolf and Dr. Gerd Bergmeister succeeded in giving our design hotel in Italy a unified language and creating a symbiosis of old and new. For the hotel's extension, the atelier was awarded gold at the "best architects award.
THE RED OF PORPHYRY
10,000 cubic metres of extremely hard porphyry rock were blasted for the new construction. The locally typical red stone was mixed with the concrete. The result: an architecture that captures the colour scheme of the landscape and almost merges with it. Structures adapt to the rocky surface, windows made of oak connect the interior with the nearby forest edge. True to the motto "You should not build in a place, but you should build the place", the architects have succeeded in recapturing the shapes and colours of the surroundings.
The idea of colouring the outer concrete shell in a reddish tone gives the building a distinctive identity.
WELL THOUGHT THROUGH ON ALL LEVELS
In the hillside wing, there are suites with loggias that, through a play of light and shadow, allow for a constant exchange between inside and outside. Extending from the pool, an outdoor sauna with panoramic views over Bolzano has been created. By using few but high-quality materials, the minimalist style continues inside. The lighting concept was specially created for our design hotel near Bolzano by Bergmeisterwolf. Throughout the house, only two different woods, pine and oak, are used. Nature, spaces and materiality combine. This makes a stay at the Belvedere an exciting journey of discovery, perceptible not only for the informed guest but also intuitively.
